marry. many couples took advantage of the new law and tied the knot. >> now, please take each other's hands. >> reporter: away from all the noise of the same-sex marriage debate, several couples were married in the quiet environment of tillman island. >> by the people of maryland, i now pronounce you married. >> reporter: and with that, clayton and wayne were one of the many same sex couples married in our state today. >> i was so quick. why was that such a big deal? >> reporter: after dealing with 20 years of don't ask, don't tell in the navy, they were married today also. >> we wanted to get married in our own state in our own home. >> reporter: they had been together for 15 years. their wedding was emotional for both of them.

>> it's overwhelming. again, it's a civil rights issue and people recognize that and they voted to give legitimacy to people who are in love with each other. >> reporter: many couples wanted to get married today for one main reason. >> because we could -- right after midnight. >> reporter: this wasn't the only ceremony. by the end of the day seven couples will have gotten married here. on tillman island, don harrison, abc2 news. in baltimore the first same-sex marriage took effect. mayor stephanie rawlings-blake was on hand. she became ordained so she could marry a man she works with and other couples. another law will help protect children from identity theft. the new law allows parents to contact the three major credit reporting agencies and place a freeze on their child's credit.

before the credit agencies were allowed to refuse. that policy is a problem for children because if they do have a credit report they are already likely a victim of fraud. the fate of tax cuts and unemployment benefits now lies with the house of representatives. the bill is in republican controlled territory where it's facing a challenge. we have the latest from washington. >> reporter: on the first day of the new year in the house, the stakes are high and intentions are higher. >> a new year's deal for a knee your's day. >> reporter: the first order of business tackling the fiscal cliff passed in the senate just hours earlier. under terms of the legislation taxes on the middle class will not go up. individuals earning $400,000 a year or more and households

after getting criticisms from students that theye still hung gri. they will lift the cap on meat portions and loosen the requirements on grains. the changes are temporary only to give schools flexibility as they change their menus. not clear if they will be reimplemented next year. secretary of state hillary clinton rang in the new year in the hospital. she is being treated for a blood clot doctors fond between her brain and her skull. we have the details on clinton's condition and whether we can expect her back to work anytime soon oar are after days -- >> reporter: after days of questions, secretary of state hillary clinton's doctors issued a statement. a scan revealed a clot in the brain situated in a space between the brain and the skull behind the right here. secretary clinton's doctors noted that the clot, which resulted from a concussion she suffered when she struck her

head did not result in a streek or neurological damage. the secretary's medical team has been treating her since sunday in a new york hospital with blood thinners to dissolve that clot. once the medication dose has been established, she will be released. the chief of vascular surgery at george town university in washington, d.c., an expert who has not treated secretary clinton tells cnn's wolf bit zer there -- blitzer, there is good news. >> this would not affect her function. she could travel. it just affects heavy physical activity. once your medication is regulated appropriately, you can go about all the normal activities of daily living. >> reporter: and secretary clinton's doctors said the secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery.

she is in good spirits, engaging with her doctors, her family and her staff. clinton, who's flown a million miles already had her international travel on hold and it doesn't look like she will be going anywhere soon. there's also a question mark about when she will be able to they have about the terrorist attack in beaning zip and the -- benghazi and the security lapses. some say clinton has to testify on benghazi before she holds confirmation hearings and that could affect timing of her decision to retire at the end of president obama's current term. >> secretary's clinton's health problems have been surprising for almost four years. she never showed any signs of health problems. well it is the new year's most popular resolution.

to pick a new rest liewsmghts -- resolution. >> we're going to increase this. >> reporter: a lot of the area gyms are filled with men and women who have a better outlook on personal health. >> i'm in here to continue last year's resolution and to keep it going. my new one is to stay in shape and not fall back off the wagon. >> reporter: her personal trainer, david, helps to keep shannon and others focused on their dpoals. >> the gym is packed the first two, two and a half months of the year. by the middle of march this has died down. then you have the people or serious about -- who are serious about getting into summertime shape. >> they've taught me tips. i've learned a lot. >> i love it.

tonight one local couple spent their entire year in the hospital. they got to welcome their new baby boy into the word. scott michael was the first baby born in twern born at med star hospital. finally delivered today, 12:26 a.m., 26 minutes after mid-night. dad wasn't thinking about his baby being the first baby of the new year. he just wanted to make sure he's healthy. >> we just want him to be okay. >> crying sounded pretty good. this is the couple's first baby. little scott michael will be in the nicu a little longer before he goes home. the raves are preparing -- ravens are preparing for a run for the super bowl. you may notice the giant logo. crews were spraying it.
